Scott Sonnon ? Blog Archive ? See the Bright Side

February 3, 2013 ? 10:38 am

The excessive amount of flying and writing I did last year, viciously brought back my eye disease, and I am finding it difficult to see the keyboard again, but I have seen so much and so many of you already that how could one complain?

My frequent flights to Russia several times a year in the 90s with inadequate oxygen delivery through my contact lenses lead to corneal deprivation and elicited a rare eye disease, called Thygeson?s Punctate Keratitis - an autoimmune response scientists cannot understand or cure.

When my eyes grow tired, they feel like they?re covered with a painful milky sand, causing extreme burning, tearing, discharge and extreme photosensitivity. It can happen from extended contact lens wear, altitude, long flights, or even reading a book or computer screen. The pain isn?t often unbearable, but the vision becomes barely functional.

Many people at seminars don?t understand why I disappear at the end of events, or don?t participate in after hours social activities. After 14 hours, my eyes, voice and brain become inoperable.?

My greatest salvation over the years has been my studies. I?m a voracious researcher, and an obsessive data tracker. Although doctors said that I wouldn?t be able to achieve any significant academic goals, some of my books are now used as university textbooks, because of my interdisciplinary studies. Within books, I found a universe beyond the errors of doctors and teachers. And through my daily messages, I reach tens of thousands of people daily, and sometimes into the millions, sharing the fruits of those studies.

Without my vision, if this degradation would continue, I cannot imagine how my life would change. I have seen so much in my life at only 43. I?ve had the honor of training thousands of incredible athletes, and speaking with many more seeking to improve their health and that of their loved ones.?

I have seen my beautiful wife and best friend finally become as truly happy as she has always deserved, my lovely children thrive into confident full young individuals, and my dear friends triumph in their individual quests against odds they thought insurmountable. I have seen my teacher smile with pride at a deed no one could have known I had done and I see her unconditional love in all that I do and am.

I have seen so many terrible and wondrous sights in my life that I could never begrudge my failing sight except for one issue?

I love writing to you. All of ?this? began for me on the ?Internet? back when it first started in the early 90s when we had dial up bulletin boards and I had the first martial art website of its kind. Though impossible to find like minds densely populated enough in a geographical area, an expanded search to a global scale cast the net wide, our community evolved and proliferated.

Great abundance has come from my writing and speaking, sufficient enough for me to be able give back here on facebook and my blog. It comes at a cost to my eyes, but I pray that it will be able to continue. We will continue to search for alternative solutions, and I am confident we will find a cure. As I sit here waiting for sunrise in Maui, I wanted to say that it has been a great honor reading your comments and your stories. Truly grateful for the vast movement we have co-created.

Very Respectfully,

Scott Sonnon
